Tech giant Google has partnered with California-based Kairos Power to use small nuclear reactors as a sustainable energy source to power its artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. The first nuclear reactor is expected to be operational within the next decade, and more are planned by 2035.
While the financial details and specific locations for these nuclear plants have not been disclosed, the move is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to meet AI’s increasing energy demands while exploring clean and reliable energy alternatives.
Google’s Senior Director for Energy and Climate, Michael Terrell, explained, “The grid needs new electricity sources to support AI technologies. This agreement helps accelerate a new technology to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably, unlocking the full potential of AI for everyone.”
As AI technology evolves, its data centres require substantial power, driving tech companies to seek stable, low-carbon energy solutions. Nuclear energy is emerging as a viable option because it can provide continuous electricity and low emissions.
Kairos Power’s Advanced Nuclear Technology
Kairos Power specializes in developing small nuclear reactors that use molten fluoride salt as a coolant, differing from traditional water-cooled reactors. This advanced technology aims to offer safer and more efficient nuclear energy. The collaboration with Google is seen as an important step toward demonstrating the commercial feasibility of nuclear energy in supporting clean energy goals.
Jeff Olson, a Kairos Power executive, emphasized, “This deal with Google is crucial in accelerating the commercialization of advanced nuclear energy and demonstrating its potential to decarbonize power grids.”
Regulatory Approvals Pending
The project will require approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other regulatory authorities. Kairos Power has already made progress, securing the first U.S. permit in 50 years to construct a new nuclear reactor. The company has begun building a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, which, if successful, could pave the way for future reactors.
Growing Interest in Nuclear Energy Among Tech Companies
Google’s partnership with Kairos Power follows similar moves by other tech giants. In July, Microsoft signed an agreement to restart operations at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear facility. Amazon also announced plans to power its data centres with nuclear energy. These initiatives reflect the growing interest in nuclear power as tech companies seek sustainable solutions to meet rising energy consumption while reducing their carbon footprints.
