The Nigerian federal government announced on Thursday a new N2.8 billion grant from Google aimed at advancing AI talent development across the country.

This funding, provided through a partnership with Data Science Nigeria, will support the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s initiatives to equip youth and unemployed Nigerians with AI skills.

The grant is part of Google’s larger $5.8 million commitment to digital skills programs across sub-Saharan Africa, with the goal of expanding digital education and creating opportunities within the region.

Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, emphasized the critical role of Google’s support in fostering Nigeria’s digital transformation through AI.

Matt Brittin, Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed Google’s dedication to nurturing Africa’s tech ecosystem, aiming to empower entrepreneurs to harness AI technology to address societal challenges.

“Google remains committed to supporting these innovators, helping them expand their impact across the continent and beyond. Our work in Africa has always been about unlocking the digital economy’s benefits for more people, and this collaboration continues that mission,” Brittin stated.

The grant will fuel three primary initiatives under Data Science Nigeria’s AI programs:

1. DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme: Targeting 20,000 young Nigerians, this program will deliver advanced training in data science and AI, preparing participants for careers in this fast-evolving field.

2. Experience AI Programme: This initiative aims to equip 25,000 educators with resources to teach AI concepts to 125,000 young learners, inspiring future AI innovators.

3. Government AI Campus Programme: Focused on policymakers and public servants, this program will provide training in AI policymaking to ensure Nigeria’s AI strategies are implemented responsibly.

This collaboration underscores Google’s ongoing commitment to unlocking the benefits of the digital economy for African nations, empowering individuals, and enhancing the continent’s technological landscape.
