President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved visa-free entry into Ghana for all African nationals, a significant step towards fostering continental unity.
The policy, fulfilling a promise made earlier this year, is expected to take effect before the president’s term concludes on January 6, 2025.
This initiative places Ghana alongside nations like Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin, which have implemented similar policies for African passport holders.
The decision aims to enhance the free movement of people, goods, and services, bolstering economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
Advancing Continental Integration
Speaking at the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD), Akufo-Addo highlighted the transformative potential of the visa-free policy.
Under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” he noted how this initiative would address travel barriers and strengthen economic ties across Africa.
“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” the president remarked, underlining the restrictions faced by African travelers.
He reiterated Ghana’s dedication to implementing visa-free travel as a means to reduce these obstacles and create new opportunities for collaboration across the continent.
Strengthening the AfCFTA Goals
The visa-free policy aligns with the objectives of the AfCFTA, which seeks to establish a unified continental market for goods and services.
By eliminating visa requirements, Ghana is making strides toward increasing intra-African trade and deepening economic cooperation among member states.
This development is expected to not only enhance Ghana’s regional influence but also set a precedent for other nations aiming to strengthen continental ties.
Implementation Timeline
The policy is set to roll out before Akufo-Addo leaves office in January 2025. The Ghanaian government is already taking steps to ensure a smooth implementation process, solidifying Ghana’s role as a leader in promoting free movement and economic integration within Africa.
This bold initiative signals a brighter future for African unity, trade, and prosperity, showcasing Ghana’s commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering a more connected continent.
