United States Vice President, Kamala Harris, speaking at the Democratic National Convention, argued that her personal experiences and role as a prosecutor give her a distinctive advantage in protecting American interests, setting herself apart from a former president she portrayed as self-centered.
Kamala Harris took the stage on Thursday night to rousing applause as she officially accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.
She laid out her vision for the United States if she wins in the upcoming November election, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
This was a pivotal moment for Harris to introduce herself to the nation and assert why she would be a more effective leader than her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.
Here are five key takeaways from Harris’s speech that concluded the convention:
1. A Historic Candidacy
Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, has become the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for president by a major political party. If elected, she would also be the first female president.
Although she didn’t directly mention these historic milestones in her 40-minute address, Harris shared personal stories, reintroducing herself to the audience.
Raised by her mother in a small apartment in San Francisco’s East Bay after her parents divorced, Harris described growing up surrounded by friends and caregivers who became her “family by love.”
She also recounted a defining moment in her life when her high school best friend, Wanda, sought refuge with Harris’s family after being abused by her stepfather. “That’s one of the reasons I became a prosecutor. To protect people like Wanda,” Harris explained.
Reflecting on her career as a prosecutor, state attorney general, senator, and vice president, Harris asserted, “I’ve always had just one client: the people.” In contrast, she criticized Trump for only ever serving “the only client he has ever had: himself.”
2. Unwavering Support for Ukraine and NATO
Harris reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and emphasized strengthening ties with NATO allies.
“As president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies,” Harris declared.
She criticized Trump for his past remarks about the war, noting that he has frequently questioned U.S. support for Ukraine.
Harris highlighted her role in warning President Zelenskyy five days before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and her efforts to rally over 50 countries against President Vladimir Putin’s actions.
Unlike her opponent, Harris vowed not to “cosy up to tyrants and dictators like Kim Jong-Un, who are rooting for Trump.”
“They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable — because he wants to be an autocrat,” Harris said. “As president, I will never waver in defence of America’s security and ideals.”
3. No Change in Gaza War Stance
Harris pledged to work towards ending Israel’s conflict with Hamas in a way that stabilizes the region while remaining resolute in protecting U.S. forces from threats posed by Iran and other adversaries.
While she reaffirmed her commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself following Hamas’s October 7 attack and called for the release of hostages and a cease-fire, she also acknowledged the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators and members of the “uncommitted” movement at the convention criticized the event’s organizers for not featuring a Palestinian American speaker.
“What has happened in Gaza in the last 10 months is devastating, so many innocent lives lost,” Harris said. “Desperate, hungry people fleeing to safety over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking.”
4. Defending Women’s Reproductive Rights
Harris also addressed a key issue from her vice presidency: reproductive rights.
She promised to restore nationwide access to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which had protected the federal right to abortion for decades. Harris condemned Trump and Republicans for enabling abortion bans in numerous states and pushing to extend these restrictions further.
“Trump is even proud of it,” Harris said. “To put it bluntly, they are out of their minds.”
Abortion rights have been a focal point for Democrats, and Harris has been urged to capitalize on this issue, which has mobilized Democratic voters.
5. A Direct Appeal to Republicans Opposing Trump
Harris made a direct appeal to Republicans who oppose Trump, urging them to look beyond party affiliations and support her over Trump, who refused to accept his defeat to President Biden in the 2020 election—a denial that fueled the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
“I know there are people with different political views watching tonight, and I want to assure you that I will be a president for all Americans,” Harris said. “I will uphold America’s constitutional principles, from the rule of law and fair elections to the peaceful transfer of power.”
Drawing on her background as a prosecutor, Harris referenced Trump’s “explicit intent” to pardon those who assaulted law enforcement officers during the Capitol riots, imprison political opponents, and use the military against U.S. citizens.
“Consider what he intends to do if we give him power again,” she added.
