The Federal Ministry of Tourism has unveiled a draft national tourism policy that aims to position Nigeria as a global tourism leader. Mrs Lola Ade-John, Minister of Tourism, announced this during a virtual meeting with stakeholders in Abuja on Saturday.
The minister stated that the Policy was an important step towards boosting Nigeria’s tourist industry. She explained that it was made possible through partnership with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and important stakeholders.
According to her, the important document represents a watershed point in Nigeria’s efforts to exploit the huge potential of its tourism industry by aligning it with global standards and sustainable practices.
The minister underlined the policy’s transformative potential, citing the strategic focus on sustainable tourism, community participation, and tourism product diversification as critical pillars.
Ade-John went on to say that this will boost Nigeria’s economy, create jobs, and preserve its culture. “This draft policy demonstrates our collective commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s tourism industry as a key driver of economic diversification.”
“We are committed to implementing frameworks that ensure accountability, foster green initiatives, and empower women and youths,” she told the crowd. She stated that the proposed strategy took a holistic approach, covering crucial issues such as digital transformation and sectoral synergies with aviation, among others.
Ade-John stated that the policy is likely to be finished in October, with a presentation to the Federal Executive Council set for November. She stated that stakeholder inclusion had been stressed throughout the policy formulation process, ensuring that the voices of all key sectors were heard.
“The next phases include more discussions and validation to improve the paper before it is implemented. “The presentation concluded with a commitment to continuous collaboration, and dialogue among stakeholders to ensure the successful realisation of the policy’s objectives,” she claimed. The summit was attended by top government officials, representatives from the business sector, and important industry stakeholders.
