The Nigerian Federal Government set aside ₦8.73 billion in 2024 to improve the power infrastructure of Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
By resolving long-standing problems with power instability that had previously interfered with operations and impacted passenger experiences, this investment sought to provide a steady electricity supply, especially for the airport’s new international terminal.
The expenditure details, as reported by BudgIT’s transparency platform, GovSpend, include:
- ₦5.67 billion was paid to J. Marine Logistics Ltd for power supply between March and September 2023.
- ₦2.19 billion on May 9, 2024, covering services from October to November 2023 and part of December 2023.
- An additional ₦874.42 million on the same day as a part-payment for power during that period.
Olumide Odunayo, an aviation expert, praised the government’s efforts but argued for sustainable alternatives, recommending the use of windmills or solar systems as alternative energy sources to lessen dependency on expensive diesel-powered generators.
As a show of its ongoing commitment to enhancing the country’s aviation infrastructure, the Federal Government has set aside ₦105.95 billion for the aviation industry in the 2025 budget, a substantial increase from the ₦63.32 billion allotted the year before.
