Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has issued a stern warning to the newly appointed heads of aviation agencies, emphasizing that their performance will be assessed based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
This announcement came during the induction and signing of performance bonds by the recently appointed CEOs of aviation agencies, including the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).
In December 2023, President Tinubu replaced heads of aviation agencies, prompting this call to service and commitment to performance.
Keyamo stated, “This is a call to service and not monetary gains. In football, if a team is not doing well, the coach gets fired because it is the coach’s responsibility to pick his team. The change made in the aviation sector is aimed at making sure the players play according to the coach’s vision.”
He emphasized that the aviation ministry’s work mainly lies in the agencies regarding regulation and revenue, placing a significant responsibility on the CEOs to work diligently to bring fresh air to the aviation ministry.
The minister highlighted the importance of signing performance bonds, outlining that CEOs will be assessed based on his five-point agenda for the industry, forming their Key Performance Indicators. Keyamo reiterated a commitment to zero tolerance for corruption, warning that any CEO found wanting will be fired and prosecuted.
“For those of you who think this is a festival, those close to me, I won’t tolerate non-performance. If you think your aim is to make money, give me your resignation letter today because thousands of Nigerians are ready to serve, and you should consider it a privilege to serve. Therefore, if you’re involved in corruption, I will be the first to hand you over to law enforcement agencies,” Keyamo added.
The Acting Director-General, Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najumo, assured the president and Nigerians of the commitment of the CEOs to transforming the aviation sector.
