The Federal Government has indicated its intention to ban certain plastic products and has expressed support for the Lagos State Government’s decision to ban Styrofoam and other single-use plastics. The government emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to waste management, urging Nigerians to prepare for a “holistic circular management of our waste.”
In a statement issued by the Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the government acknowledges the environmental challenges posed by the indiscriminate use of single-use plastics. The statement commends the Lagos State Government for taking the initiative to address the issue.
The minister reveals that the Federal Ministry of Environment has recently inaugurated an interagency committee to engage in robust consultations across government, businesses, and stakeholders to develop a sustainable solution sensitive to Nigeria’s context.
Salako mentions that the ministry is examining policies and initiatives to promote alternatives to plastics, emphasizing that the poorly regulated and indiscriminate use of plastics must be addressed. He notes that Nigerians should be prepared for an inevitable change in this area, including banning certain products.
As part of the interim measures, Nigerians are advised to take personal environmental actions to reduce and reuse plastics and explore recycling options for their plastic waste. The government plans to roll out a robust awareness campaign and sensitization to prepare the public for the impending ban on plastics and the comprehensive circular management of waste.
This move aligns with efforts to address environmental concerns associated with plastic pollution and encourages sustainable waste management practices in the country.
