President Bola Tinubu has recently appointed Emomotimi Agama as the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), succeeding Lamido Yuguda.
Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed Agama’s appointment and highlighted his impressive credentials. Agama holds a Ph.D. in Economics and is a Chartered Management Accountant, Economist, Investment Analyst, Chartered Stock Broker, and Risk Manager.
Before assuming his new role, Agama served as the Managing Director at the Nigerian Capital Market Institute (NCMI), a Securities and Exchange Commission subsidiary. His previous roles at the SEC include Head of Registration, Exchanges, Market Infrastructure, and Innovation Department, Special Assistant to the Executive Commissioner Operations, and Head of Public Offerings.
Agama’s expertise extends to international experience, as he was seconded to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in 2018. He is actively involved in various SEC committees, including the Rules Committee and the SEC committee on the adoption of IFRS in Nigeria, and he spearheaded the introduction of Derivatives trading in the Nigerian Capital Market.
Before his tenure at the SEC, Agama held positions at the University of Benin, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, and is a Fellow of the IFC-Milken Institute Capital Markets Program.
His educational background is impressive, with degrees in Accountancy, Banking and Finance, and Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics with distinction. Agama has also completed several certificate programs in Capital Market, Risk Management, Enterprise Analysis, Project Management, and Fintech law and Policy, among others.
Agama’s global contributions include representing the Nigerian SEC as a plenary member of the Regulatory Oversight Committee (ROC) of the Global Legal Entity Identifier, where he serves as Vice Chairman. He has led initiatives such as the Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan (2015-2025) and significantly revitalised the Commodities Market.
With his extensive experience, academic qualifications, and global contributions, Emomotimi Agama is poised to lead SEC towards continued growth and innovation in Nigeria’s capital market.
