The Nigerian Naira continues to struggle under persistent demand pressures in the foreign exchange (forex) market, with the parallel (black) market rate now reflecting deepening economic concerns.
As of Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the US Dollar exchanged for ₦1600 (buying) and ₦1609 (selling) in Lagos’ black market, according to reliable sources within the Bureau De Change (BDC) network.
These figures highlight the ongoing disconnect between official and unofficial forex windows, as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) maintains a more moderated stance.
The CBN’s published exchange rate fluctuated between ₦1596 and ₦1603 on the same day, a marginal difference when compared to the steep rates seen in street-level trading.
Despite multiple policy interventions, Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves remain under pressure, with supply chains disrupted and import demands outweighing official forex allocations.
In response, the apex bank has repeatedly urged individuals and businesses to patronize authorized dealers and banks for forex transactions, warning that the black market remains unregulated and potentially exploitative.
Understanding the Forex Gap
The parallel market, though unofficial, has become a key reference point for many businesses and importers due to the difficulty in accessing foreign currency at official rates. With lingering inflation, import-heavy consumer trends, and investor flight, the demand for dollars in the informal sector continues to surge.
According to financial analysts, the widening gap between the CBN and black market rates suggests a persistent trust deficit in monetary policy execution.

Forex Advice for Consumers and Businesses
