Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is scheduled to unveil the apex bank’s monetary policy thrust and economic outlook today, during the 58th Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria Annual Bankers’ Dinner. The announcement was made by the CBN via their Twitter handle (now X) on Thursday.
“The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, to unveil the Bank’s Monetary Policy Thrust and Economic Outlook for 2024. Join us via https://YouTube.com/cenbank at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 24, 2023,” the tweet stated.
This address will serve as an opportunity for Mr. Cardoso to elucidate the CBN’s monetary policy and its strategies to safeguard the national currency, the Naira.
Notably, this event marks the first public engagement for Cardoso since his appointment as CBN Governor by President Bola Tinubu on September 15, 2023.
Criticism has surrounded Cardoso since assuming office, particularly for the absence of the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meetings—the highest policy-making committee of the apex bank. The last of these meetings occurred on July 25. This address presents an opportunity for the Governor to address and clarify the approach and plans of the CBN under his leadership.
