The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially denied reports claiming the introduction of new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes.
In a statement released on April 2, 2025, the CBN labeled these reports as false and clarified that such content did not originate from the bank.
The misinformation suggested that the CBN planned to roll out these high-denomination notes to reduce cash-handling costs and improve liquidity management, with some versions attributing the announcement to a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., and indicating a release date of May 1, 2025.
The CBN addressed these claims through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng.”
