As a means of eliminating insecurity in the nation, Major General Garba Wahab (retd), the Director General of the Nigeria Army (Boko haram) Resource Centre, has urged the judiciary to expedite judgement on terrorists.
This comes in response to reports that over 50,000 Boko Haram terrorists have been arrested by the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, and only about 300 of them have been prosecuted.
Speaking at a two-day roundtable discussion in Abuja with the theme “Asymmetrical National Security Challenges, the Army, and National Development,” Wahab asserted that in order to prevent impunity, the court must carry out its sacred duty of punishing terrorists.
“The judiciary must be aware of its responsibilities and the local government authorities should be allowed to function,” he stated as one strategy to reduce insecurity, Boko haram.
It is unacceptable that it would take 20 years for a case to be decided in a Nigerian court, and that people who have committed egregious crimes will not receive fair punishment.
That is the situation. A previous president brought it up, stating that in Nigeria, a straightforward theft case takes ten years to resolve. Wahab argued that allowing local governments to operate was necessary and that localising security would also aid in reducing crime in the nation.
He went on, “We are asking those in government to figure out a method to make sure that the local government and the judiciary are permitted to operate effectively. You can localise the security architecture if you permit local government to operate. By doing this, problems with insecurity will be dealt with at the battalion level.

Since these battalions support the state and interact with both local and state government, we ought to start at the battalion level. When an issue arises, we shouldn’t wait to notify divisional headquarters. Most of the time, divisional headquarters are preoccupied with five or six states.
