The United States Mission to Nigeria has announced an investigation into how previous aid to Nigeria and other countries has been used. This follows US President Donald Trump’s decision on January 20, 2025, to ban all foreign aid for 90 days, citing concerns about global destabilisation and misalignment with American interests.
The action comes in response to rising calls for a complete review of US Agency for International Development (USAID) health money. The US Mission to Nigeria acknowledged on Tuesday via its verified X (previously Twitter) profile that monitoring procedures are in place to track previous assistance provided by the US government.
“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” according to the mission.
The US Mission also criticised the ongoing carnage carried out by Boko Haram in Nigeria. “The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” according to the statement. The statement also referred to Boko Haram’s official designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation by the US Secretary of State on November 14, 2013.
The designation is intended to freeze the group’s assets, limit its fundraising, punish its members, and bar their travel to the United States. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigeria and regional partners to defeat terrorism and improve security in West Africa.
