Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a 44-year-old tax officer, emerges as a leading contender for the presidency in Senegal.
Having emerged as a prominent figure within the opposition party, Faye entered the presidential race amidst dissatisfaction with the incumbent president, Macky Sall.
Preliminary results indicate Faye’s significant lead, igniting jubilant scenes across Dakar, the capital.
Five candidates, including the sole female contender Anta Babacar Ngom, have conceded victory to Faye. However, Amadou Ba, the ruling coalition’s nominee, hints at the possibility of a run-off.
If declared the winner, Faye would become the youngest democratically elected president in West Africa.
But who is Bassirou Diomaye Faye?
Born in Ndiaganiao, Senegal, in 1980, Faye pursued higher education, culminating in a master’s degree in law and enrollment in the National School of Administration (ENA) in 2004.
Transitioning into a career as a tax inspector, Faye’s association with Ousmane Sonko deepened within the Taxes and Estates Union, eventually leading him to a significant role within the opposition party.
Following Sonko’s arrest in 2021, Faye assumed leadership within PASTEF, steering the party through challenges and ultimately securing the presidential nomination for 2024.
Supported by former president Abdoulaye Wade and the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), Faye’s candidacy gained momentum, bolstering his electoral prospects.
As preliminary election results favor Faye, the nation awaits the outcome, which is expected imminently.
