In a profession traditionally dominated by men, Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo has carved out a remarkable niche as Nigeria’s pioneering female Boeing 787 pilot.
With Qatar Airways, she has become a symbol of progress and perseverance in the aviation industry.
At just 31, Adeola has made history as the first Nigerian woman to command the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This advanced aircraft, capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 0.85 (approximately 1,024 kilometers per hour), carries up to 250 passengers across long distances, all under Adeola’s expert command.
Her journey to this distinguished role was marked by significant challenges. Born on October 16, 1990, in Kaduna, Nigeria, Adeola navigated various educational institutions in Kaduna and Ibadan, facing hurdles such as religious conflicts.
Nevertheless, her unwavering determination saw her through secondary education at First Baptist Model High School in Kaduna by 2007.
Following secondary school, Adeola initially enrolled in a pre-degree program at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Oyo State.
However, her fervor for aviation led her to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, where she completed her training between 2009 and 2010. Her quest for excellence continued in Florida, USA, at Sunrise Aviation Inc.
Upon her return to Nigeria, Adeola embarked on her professional flying career, starting with Medview Airlines in Lagos in 2013 as a First Officer on Boeing 737s.
Her exceptional abilities quickly earned her a promotion to the Boeing 767-300ER. The pinnacle of her career came in 2018 when she joined Qatar Airways as the first Nigerian woman to pilot the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Adeola’s career trajectory includes notable achievements such as transatlantic flights and operating the Lagos-to-Abuja route for Qatar Airways beginning in 2020.
She joins a pioneering group of African female pilots, including Chinyere Kalu, Nigeria’s first female commercial pilot, and Asli Hassan Abade, Somalia’s first female aviator.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Captain Adeola is a dedicated wife and mother. She married Seun Funmi Olamilekan Sowemimo on April 22, 2017, and juggles the demands of both her career and family life with grace.
Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo exemplifies hope, dedication, and the power of breaking barriers. Her story not only reflects her personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for young African girls, demonstrating that with commitment and resilience, they too can fulfill their dreams and overcome obstacles.
Her journey underscores the message that hard work and determination can overcome the highest challenges, making the seemingly impossible achievable.
