Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged Nigerians to increase their vigilance and aggressively hold political leaders accountable as the country enters 2025.
In his New Year’s speech, Atiku emphasised citizens’ need to constantly watch government officials’ activities and decisions to protect democratic ideals and prevent abuse of power.
Atiku stated, “This New Year marks the beginning of a momentous era, one of heightened public awareness and vigilance. It is a time when every Nigerian must closely observe the actions and decisions of our political leaders.”
He emphasised the importance of preventing anyone from using unbridled authority that could undermine liberties or take advantage of public service for personal benefit, and he called on citizens to actively participate in defending democracy.
As he reflected on the previous year’s difficulties, Atiku urged unity in tackling national concerns and expressed gratitude for Nigerians’ tenacity.
“The vigilance of the citizenry is paramount in ensuring that those in leadership never abuse the power entrusted to them,” Atiku added.
In addition, he voiced hope for economic recovery in 2025 and hoped that the difficulties of the past few years would be forgotten.
