Food security is providing enough food for everyone to live a healthy life, and many African countries are making progress in this regard. These countries are increasing crop production, storing food for the future, and using better farming methods.
Here are the top five African countries leading in food security by 2024:
Egypt
Egypt has enhanced its food supply through large-scale irrigation projects and improved farming methods. The Nile River and recovered desert lands are crucial for food production. The country produces 23 million metric tonnes of cereal per year but still imports 60% of its wheat requirements. Egypt exports rice, wheat, fruits, and vegetables.
Tunisia
It has a strong farming system that produces key crops like wheat and olive oil. It exports olive oil, dates, and citrus fruits, but faces challenges such as water shortages and desertification.
Morocco
Morocco has improved food security through modern farming methods and irrigation under the Green Morocco Plan, producing 9 million metric tonnes of cere.
Kenya
Kenya’s farming sector benefits from government programs and modern technology; it produces 3.5 million metric tonnes of maize annually and is well-known for tea and coffee; it also exports flowers, vegetables, and other horticultural products; Droughts occasionally reduce its food production.
Ghana
Ghana has increased food production with programs like Planting for Food and Jobs; it produces more than 3 million tonnes of maize annually and is a leading exporter of cocoa, yams, and cashews; however, climate change causes unpredictable rainfall that impacts its crop production.
