The latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) highlights a significant growth in internet usage across various technologies in Nigeria.
As of January 2025, the total number of active internet subscribers across all service providers reached 142,161,409, with GSM technology leading the market at 141,655,587 users.
Wireless technology followed with 285,702 subscribers, while Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) recorded 206,067 users.
According to the NCC report, Fixed Wired technology had the least number of subscribers, with just 14,053 users as of January 2025.
Meanwhile, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, which was once widely used, now has no active subscribers—further evidence of its decline as newer, more advanced technologies take over.
The data also reveals a steady increase in GSM-based internet subscriptions over the past several months. In August 2024, GSM internet users stood at 130 million, rising to 132 million in September, 134 million in October, 136 million in November, and 138 million in December, before reaching 141 million in January 2025.
According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Wireless technology maintained a stable subscriber base of 285,702 users from August 2024 through January 2025, showing no fluctuations in adoption.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), however, experienced a fluctuating trend. It started with 199,960 users in August 2024 and grew steadily to 205,634 in September, followed by an increase to 212,071 in October. However, the number of subscribers dipped slightly to 210,364 in November, then declined further to 208,565 in December, before settling at 206,067 in January 2025.
Meanwhile, fixed-wireless technology saw a consistent rise in usage. In August 2024, 8,680 people subscribed to the service, increasing to 9,453 in September. The upward trend continued with 10,661 subscribers in October, 11,739 in November, and 12,869 in December, eventually reaching 14,053 by January 2025.
The NCC report also shows an overall increase in active internet data subscriptions across all technologies—GSM, Fixed Wired, Wireless, and VoIP. In August 2024, the total number of subscribers stood at 131 million, rising to 132 million in September and 134 million in October. The upward trend persisted with 136 million in November, 139 million in December, and ultimately 142 million in January 2025.
