1977 Egyptian president Anwar Sadat visits Israel
Sadat was the first Arab head of state to visit Israel and address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. His visit drew harsh criticism from both Israel and the Arab world. Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978 for their efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict.

1969 Second Moon Landing
Apollo 12, the second spacecraft to land on the Moon, was the sixth manned flight of NASA’s Apollo program. Crew members Charles Conrad Jr. and Alan L. Bean became the third and fourth humans to set foot on the Moon’s surface. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first two.

1969 Pelé’s 1000th goal
The Brazilian footballer, widely regarded as the greatest athlete of the twentieth century, scored his 1,000th professional goal against Vasco da Gama at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium.

1943 Janowska camp uprising
In 1941, the concentration camp in occupied Poland was established. In November 1943, anticipating the advance of Soviet troops, the Nazis attempted to evacuate the camp and used the inmates to remove evidence of previous executions and mass killings. On this day, the inmates staged an insurgency and attempted to flee. The vast majority of escapees, however, were apprehended and killed.

1794 Signing of the Jay Treaty
The treaty, formally known as the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America, was signed by representatives from both countries. It called for the British to hand over northern posts to the US and to regard the US as the most favoured nation for trade between the two countries.
