• 2008 Barack Obama is elected

  Obama is the 44th President of the United States and the first African-American to hold the position. He was elected twice and succeeded President George W. Bush.

• 1995 Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin

  He was Israel’s Prime Minister at the time of his assassination in Tel Aviv by Yigal Amir, an Israeli who opposed Rabin’s role in the Oslo Peace Accords. The Accords were a set of agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that established the Palestinian self-determination process and established the Palestinian Authority.

• 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis

  The 444-day crisis began when a group of students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran and kidnapped 52 Americans. The crisis caused a breakdown in diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran.

• 1952 US National Security Agency formed

  The NSA, as it is popularly known, is an intelligence organization responsible for monitoring and collecting signal intelligence worldwide. The Armed Forces Security Agency preceded the agency.

• 1925 First woman governor of a state in the US

  Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected as the first and only female governor of Wyoming in the United States. She was not only the first woman to be elected as a state governor in the United States, but she was also the first female director of the United States Mint.
