What began as a favor for family has turned into a thriving business for Derrick Morgan Jr., a 34-year-old former attorney from Indianapolis who now earns over $40,000 a month helping clients with trademark filings; all while living between Dallas and Mexico City.
In 2020, as the pandemic slowed work at his law firm, Morgan helped his cousin register a trademark. That experience rekindled his interest in intellectual property law.
He soon joined Fiverr, a freelancing platform, offering affordable legal services to small business owners.
“I needed a way to make more money,” he said. “And this trademark thing came up.”
Initially earning just $180 in his first month, Morgan saw rapid growth. By his third month, he was pulling in $5,000, and by month four, it doubled.
His down-to-earth approach resonated with entrepreneurs, earning him Fiverr’s Top Rated Seller status.
In 2021, Morgan left the law firm to focus full-time on his trademark business, which is now on track to generate nearly $500,000 this year.
He pays himself over $350,000, assisted by a paralegal and an AI tool.
“I meet clients where they are,” Morgan said, highlighting his simple, approachable style that contrasts with traditional high-fee legal services.
Living in Mexico City, where costs are lower allows him to save and invest nearly 40% of his income.
For Morgan, it’s not just about money: “It’s about being able to do what I want, when I want.”
