The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has unveiled significant changes for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), introducing customised question papers and expanding computer-based testing to enhance examination integrity.
Customised Question Papers
In a move to curb examination malpractice, WAEC will implement pre-printed, individualised question papers for each candidate in selected subjects, including English Language (Papers 1 & 3), Biology 1, Mathematics 1, and Economics 1.
This initiative ensures that no two candidates receive the same set of questions, thereby minimising opportunities for cheating. Each personalised paper will be linked to a specific Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet.
WAEC’s Head of National Office, Amos Dangut, emphasised the importance of this development, stating that any candidate who attempts to write a paper other than the one assigned will face consequences.
Expansion of Computer-Based Testing
Building on its initial implementation for private candidates in 2024, WAEC will conduct its first-ever Computer-Based Test (CBT) for school candidates in 2025.
Approximately 1.97 million students from 23,554 schools across Nigeria are expected to participate in this digital examination format, scheduled between April 24 and June 20. The gender distribution is 979,228 males and 994,025 females.
Support and Resources
To assist candidates in adapting to these changes, WAEC has introduced several digital learning tools, including the WAEC E-Study Portal, WAEC E-Learning Portal, and WAEC Konnect. These platforms offer access to past questions, marking schemes, performance analysis, and direct updates for candidates and stakeholders.
WAEC has also compiled past question papers and chief examiners’ reports for various subjects to help candidates understand expectations and improve performance.
Examination Results and Certification
The council assures that the 2025 WASSCE results will be released 45 days after the exam’s conclusion. Candidates can access digital copies of their certificates within 90 days via the WAEC Digital Certificate platform.
