A passport is your passport to the rest of the world, but it is among the most expensive in some countries. While many travellers focus on airfare and lodging expenses, the cost of a passport can be a significant financial obstacle. Let’s look at the world’s most expensive passports and how they compare:

Australia – $412

On January 1, 2025, the price of an Australian passport rose from $398 to $412, making it the most costly passport in the world. While Australia’s passport allows visa-free travel to a number of countries, its exorbitant cost has sparked debate among travellers.

Mexico – $353.90

Mexico ranks second, with a passport costing $353.90. Despite ranking 23rd in worldwide passport power, the cost is much higher than that of several higher-ranked passports. Mexican citizens continue to have visa-free entry to many countries, particularly those in Latin America and Europe.

United States ($252.72)

The US passport is the world’s third most expensive, at $252.72. Despite its exorbitant cost, it remains one of the most powerful passports in the world, allowing Americans to travel to a wide range of places without a visa. However, US citizens must also consider renewal expenses, which make the expense even more considerable with time.

New Zealand – $193.72

New Zealanders must spend $193.72 for their passport, putting the country in fourth place. The New Zealand passport, known for its great global mobility, provides visa-free access to over 180 countries, making it a worthwhile investment despite its expensive cost.

Japan – $162

Japan, known for having one of the world’s most powerful passports, charges its people $162 to obtain one. Although this cost is lower than that of the countries listed above, it is still significantly higher than in other Asian countries. Japanese passport holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to many countries, making it one of the most popular travel passports.
