As of January 2025, the federal minimum wage in the United States remains unchanged at $7.25 per hour, despite ongoing efforts to raise it to $15.

However, several states and municipalities have taken independent action to set significantly higher minimum wage standards.
Notably, Washington state leads the way, with multiple cities implementing some of the highest wage rates in the country.
Cities with the Highest Minimum Wage in the U.S. (2025)
According to Investopedia, the five U.S. cities offering the highest minimum wages this year are all in Washington state:
1. Burien, WA – Large employers (500+ employees) must pay $21.16 per hour, while mid-sized employers (21-499 employees) offer $20.16 per hour. Wages are adjusted annually for inflation.
2. Tukwila, WA – Workers at large companies earn $21.10 per hour, while those at mid-sized employers receive $20.10. By July 2025, mid-sized employers must match the large employer rate.
3. Renton, WA – Large businesses pay employees $20.90 per hour, while mid-sized companies currently offer $18.90, set to increase to $19.90 by mid-year. Wages are adjusted yearly for inflation.
4. Seattle, WA – All employers must pay a minimum of $20.76 per hour. Seattle was the first U.S. city to introduce a $15 minimum wage law back in 2014.
5. SeaTac, WA – Employees in hospitality and transportation industries earn $20.17 per hour, while mid-sized employers pay $20.10. These wages are also adjusted annually based on inflation.
