The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to economically empower 10 million women by 2027, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of transforming Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, announced this initiative during a press briefing in Abuja, marking her first 100 days in office. She emphasized that women are pivotal to national productivity and economic transformation.
To achieve this goal, the Ministry has launched several key programs:
-
MOWA-SARA Accelerated Skills Acquisition Programme: In collaboration with WEMA Bank, this initiative aims to train 500,000 women in vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion. The pilot phase has commenced in Kano State, enrolling 2,500 women.
-
Financial Literacy and Inclusion: Efforts are underway to enhance women’s financial literacy, equipping them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about savings, investments, and wealth creation. This includes improving access to secure financial products tailored to women’s unique needs.
-
Food Intervention Programs: To address economic hardships, the Ministry has launched food intervention initiatives targeting women and vulnerable groups.
Additionally, the Ministry is addressing period poverty by launching a nationwide campaign to provide menstrual hygiene kits to 10,000 young girls, ensuring they stay in school and maintain their dignity.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, recognizing their critical role in achieving sustainable economic growth and national development.
