The news of a total block on “all federalfinancial assistance” by President Donald Trump on foreign aid and HIV-related activities has sparked global anxiety, especially among African countries. With so many African healthcare programs, especially HIV/AIDS vaccinations, relying on USAID financing, many African countries appear to be feeling the heat more than other countries that receive US foreign aid.

Here are the five countries with the highest HIV rate:

Swaziland / Eswatini

Eswatini has the world’s highest HIV/AIDS infection rate, with 27.20% of the population affected. The illness was apparently spread across the country by unprotected intercourse, transactional sex, and sexual assault. In April 2018, King MSWATI III changed the country’s name from Swaziland to Eswatini.

Lesotho

Lesotho now has a 25.00% HIV/AIDS infection rate. The bulk of those impacted are women and young people aged 15 to 24 from low-income communities. Furthermore, the country has limited access to decent jobs, formal education, and competent medical care.

Botswana

Botswana has the world’s third-highest HIV/AIDS infection rate, with 21.90% of the population affected. Infections are particularly common among female sex workers. The disease is more prevalent among adult females than males, as in Swaziland, and has spread mostly through forced marriages and gender-based violence.

South Africa

South Africa still has a large number of persons living with HIV/AIDS, with 18.90% of the population testing positive for the infection. These high rates have been linked to sexual abuse, a lack of proper information, and incorrect assumptions about the illness. The majority of individuals affected are women under 40, including those who are pregnant.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe ranks sixth among nations affected by HIV/AIDS, with 12% of the population testing positive for the infection. Poverty, inadequate education, and a high frequency of other infectious diseases all contribute to transmission, though the country is working to reduce it across the board.
