In response to obasanjo’s public doubts on the feasibility of the $2 billion spent on the facilities, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an invitation to him to see its restored refineries. As it was reported from a television interview, Obasanjo questioned the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries’ progress, pointing to past setbacks in his administration’s attempts to modernise Nigeria’s refining capabilities.

Not too long ago, I was informed that over two billion dollars had been wasted on the refinery since then, and it still won’t function. Why are they still with Aliko if someone informs you that it’s functioning now? Aliko would not only make his refinery run but also make it deliver,” Obasanjo had said.

NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged the former president’s stature and contributions, but emphasised the company’s recent transformation.

“We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in high regard as a statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development. His observations are deeply respected. However, we wish to emphasise that NNPC has undergone a remarkable transformation,” Soneye said.

Soneye attributed the successes to the NNPC board’s leadership, led by Group CEO Mele Kyari, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s innovative energy policy. Soneye invited Obasanjo to assess progress personally.

“We cordially invite President Obasanjo to inspect the repaired refineries. His insight and experience are important, and we are grateful for his leadership. This tour will allow you to see the accomplishments we have made under NNPC Limited’s leadership”.
