The Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja was the scene of a sad occurrence where a stampede during a Christmas charity event killed ten people, including four children, and injured several more.
The church, located in the Maitama District at Abuja, organised the distribution of food and clothing items as part of its annual Christmas charity outreach.
Early in the morning, a sizable crowd assembled to accept the allocated goods, causing the stampede.
Four children were among the ten people who died. A number of other people were hurt; some have been treated and released, while others are still being treated.
Due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria, this tragedy is the second stampede of this kind to occur in a week, underscoring the difficulties encountered while distributing significant amounts of charity.
Large crowds have resulted from the growing number of charity activities planned before Christmas, which calls for better safety precautions to avoid such incidents.
Federal Capital Territory Police Command has commenced investigations into the incident. To avoid catastrophes in the future, authorities have underlined the significance of appropriate crowd control measures during such meetings.
