In an effort to improve bilateral ties, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier travelled to Nigeria on December 11, to meet President Tinubu with an emphasis on energy and economic cooperation.
Both leaders underlined the significance of strengthening ties between their countries during their meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
President Tinubu assured German businesses that Nigeria would implement agreements that facilitate investment in renewable energy, youth skill development, and industrial expansion.
He outlined measures to create a business-friendly environment, including active foreign exchange reforms, decentralisation of electricity generation, and import duty waivers for machinery.
Germany’s increasing interest in Nigeria as a top investment destination is demonstrated by President Steinmeier’s visit, accompanied by a high-ranking business delegation from industries like IT, high-tech, and energy.
This interaction is anticipated to increase the two countries’ economic and cultural relations by creating opportunities for cooperation in various fields.
President Tinubu emphasised the need to remove bureaucratic barriers to corporate activities, while both presidents expressed excitement for deepening the collaboration. “We have an open-door policy: ease of entry, ease of exit,” he said, highlighting Nigeria’s willingness to accept and encourage international economic ventures.
The conversations and agreements made are expected to open the door to more collaboration and reciprocal advantages in the years to come.
