Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of Ghana has conceded defeat in the election held on Saturday and congratulated former President John Mahama, the opposition candidate, on his win.
“The people have voted for change,” said Bawumia.
The nation is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation, which has caused the cost of necessities to skyrocket, young people to struggle to find employment, and the country to be unable to pay back its obligations.
Bawumia made a concession, but no formal outcomes have been announced.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the two major parties’ supporters were obstructing the process, which is why the results were delayed. The EC requested that the police evacuate the polling places.
Supporters of Mahama have gathered in the country’s streets to cheer, wave flags, blow vuvuzelas, and spin motorcycles in celebration.
