The Senate has halted its work on the Tax Reforms Bills as the committee set to meet AGF today, according to reports by The PUNCH.
The Senate also directed its Committee on Finance to postpone the public hearing until the agitation in the public area was resolved.
To address the problems with the Tax Reform Bills, it also established a special committee to consult with the executive branch and collaborate with the federal government.
Jibrin Barau, the deputy president of the Senate, said this at Wednesday’s session.
Since the Tax Reform Bills were presented to the National Assembly, there has been debate surrounding them.
These are tax reform bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024, and the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024.
The northern governors categorically rejected the legislation, citing their anti-democracy stance.
The highest economic advisory authority in Nigeria, the National Economic Council, then asked that the tax reforms bill be taken out of the NASS for more deliberations.
