President Bola Tinubu commended Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
In 2021, the famous development economist and global financial specialist became the first African and woman to chair the World Trade Organisation, which has 164 members.
Her first term as the WTO’s seventh Director-General will end on August 31, 2025, with the second term beginning on September 1. The Nigerian leader expressed joy that Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s unanimous selection to a second four-year term underlined the international community’s faith and confidence in her ability to push multilateral trade for long-term global development.
The Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu is optimistic that her ongoing leadership would improve the international economic organisation’s role as a crucial pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance over the next four years.
According to the statement, “As a committed member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria will continue to support the WTO’s mission of fostering a fair, inclusive, and equitable multilateral trading system.”
