President Bola Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit to Nigeria.
The honour was presented on Sunday, November 17, at the Nigeria-India Bilateral Meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as part of the Indian Prime Minister’s official engagements in the country.
President Tinubu highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and India, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations.
He praised Prime Minister Modi’s democratic achievements, noting his historic success in leading India to three consecutive election victories in a diverse and complex society.
“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries.
“You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms, you have been doing a good job historically, winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.
“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger.
“This to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner,” Tinubu said.
In conferring the GCON title, Tinubu affirmed Nigeria’s recognition of India as a vital partner and its appreciation for the contributions made under Modi’s leadership.
