U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and owner of X (formerly Twitter), to head a newly established cabinet position aimed at enhancing government efficiency.
Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, along with a host of other ventures, will co-lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency with Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential contender.
The department is designed to streamline government operations and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy.
This high-profile appointment comes as Musk has been a significant financial backer of Trump’s campaign, contributing over $200 million towards his election efforts.
Musk’s role will be informal and will not require Senate confirmation, meaning he will retain his leadership positions at Tesla, X, and SpaceX while also taking on this new challenge.
In a statement released on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Trump emphasized that Musk and Ramaswamy will spearhead the effort to “dismantle government bureaucracy, eliminate excessive regulations, reduce wasteful spending, and reorganize federal agencies.”
The President-elect framed this initiative as a major step towards fulfilling longstanding Republican goals and providing valuable external guidance for the government’s reform.
The Department of Government Efficiency, which will operate outside the traditional structures of federal government, is set to work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to drive substantial structural changes and implement a more entrepreneurial approach to governance.
The project is slated to conclude by July 4, 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
As the world’s richest person, Musk stands to gain considerable influence in Washington, with his companies potentially benefiting from favorable government policies.
His substantial financial contributions to Trump’s campaign, alongside public appearances with the former president, have already positioned Musk as a key ally in the political sphere.
Ramaswamy, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination before backing Trump, brings his experience as a founder of a pharmaceutical company to this partnership, further strengthening the new department’s mission to streamline U.S. governance.
