Two pastors have been suspended by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) due to accusations of homosexual behaviour. In a memo dated October 28, 2024, Sunday Akande, the church’s National Overseer, described the suspension and mandated a formal investigation.
Citing scriptural and doctrinal grounds, the memo, which is sent to the special assistant to the general overseer of administration, reiterates that the RCCG does not support homosexuality in any form. During the inquiry, which is anticipated to be completed in two weeks, the accused pastors have been temporarily released from their duties, Akande stated. The church promised that the investigation would be carried out in confidence, guaranteeing “care and integrity” and protecting the privacy of all those concerned.
Read the memo below:
This memo is to inform you about severe charges of homosexuality against… In accordance with our mission’s dedication to following biblical teachings, we must take these charges very seriously.
As you are aware, the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s (RCCG) doctrine prohibits or tolerates homosexual behaviour. This attitude is firmly based on biblical principles, including but not limited to: Leviticus 18:22.
“You shall not lay with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination. 1 Corinthians 6:9–10: Do you not realise that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be fooled by sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, or homosexuality.
You are now instructed to carry out a comprehensive inquiry in light of these claims. Additionally, until the investigation’s conclusion, which is anticipated in two weeks, all other accused individuals are to be temporarily released from all of their duties in all mission organs.
It is imperative that we respond to this matter with compassion, honesty, and in line with our church’s principles. Please make sure that all parties concerned are respected and that the investigation is carried out in a discreet manner.
