Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, welcomed ancestral relations to the Palace on Saturday for the 2024 Emorọ (new yam festival), which honours the fresh harvest of yams. After being neglected for a number of years, Oba Ewuare brought back the old feast last year, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
In order to strengthen prayers to the Almighty and his ancestors for peace, a magnificent crop, and the protection of the Binis, the Oba declared two weeks of fasting, which was broken with the feast. Ceremonial sword twirling, Ehọ dance performances, and Oba tributes were all part of the festivities. Village chiefs, young people, and well-known individuals were among the visitors amused by cultural troupes.
Attendees included members of the Umu-Osiogwa Community, descendants of Oba Ewuare’s daughter Edoleyi, the Ugbe Royal family, and Onitcha-Alona connections. Chief Michael Odiakosa, a descendant of Oba Esigie, led delegations from Isse-Uku in Delta State. Prince Ephraim Odiakosa Nwabuekei and members of the Umu-Osiogwa Community, who were descended from Edoleyi, the daughter of Oba Ewuare I, led the Onitcha-Alona connections. Attendees included members of the Benin Royal family, Enigie (Benin Dukes), Igbama (youths), Okaighele (youth leaders), Edionwere (village heads), and Esigie of Issele-Uku.
Other notable figures in attendance include Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), Prof. Kensington Obahiagbon, and Phil Obanor, Head of the Benin NTA station. By highlighting his ancestors’ migration from Benin, Prince Ephraim Odiakosa Nwabuekei explained the historical connection between his family and the Benin monarchy. He acknowledged Oba Ewuare II as his great-uncle and royal father.
The occasion emphasised the importance of Emorọ in Benin culture and strengthened ancestry and allegiance to the Oba. Ancestral altars were essential in honouring the dead and preserving contact between the living and the dead, and the event highlighted Benin’s rich legacy. Intricate artwork, such as carved elephant tusks and commemorative brass heads, adorns these altars. The occasion came before Holy Aruosa Cathedral’s eighth coronation anniversary celebration.
