The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a new Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code, *829#, to enhance taxpayers’ experience in Nigeria. FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji made the announcement on Wednesday at the Revenue House in Abuja, coinciding with this year’s Customer Service Week, themed “Above and Beyond.”
With this new code, Nigeria joins five other African countries in streamlining tax payment processes through USSD technology.
Dare Adekanmbi, the Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, explained that the USSD code allows taxpayers from any mobile network to access real-time services. These include retrieving their Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN), verifying Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC), obtaining information on tax types and rates, finding the nearest FIRS office, and addressing general tax-related inquiries.
During the launch, Adedeji highlighted the agency’s commitment to making tax administration more accessible. “Every taxpayer—whether in busy cities or remote areas—can connect with FIRS seamlessly,” he stated. He encouraged taxpayers to utilize the USSD code for all their inquiries.
Additionally, FIRS introduced the Customer Centricity Guide, a booklet designed to prioritize taxpayer needs. Adedeji remarked, “With the *829# USSD code, taxpayers can easily retrieve their TIN, verify their TCC, access information on tax types and rates, locate FIRS offices, and get answers to general inquiries.”
He further explained, “These services are now available via a simple mobile phone without internet access. This technological advancement shows our commitment to creating an efficient, transparent, and responsive tax system.”
The unveiling of the Customer Centricity Guide also reflects FIRS’s commitment to treating taxpayers with respect, professionalism, and efficiency. Adedeji emphasized the guide’s role in ensuring positive interactions with taxpayers.
Nnenna Akajemeli, Servicom’s national coordinator, praised the FIRS for its dedication to taxpayer satisfaction. She noted that launching the USSD code *829# and the Customer Centricity Guide are vital steps toward simplifying tax processes and improving service quality for citizens.
Loveth Onanuga, FIRS Director of the Taxpayers’ Service Department, added that the agency aims to exceed taxpayer expectations and deliver exceptional service, aligning with the week’s theme.
