Aliko Dangote, Chairman and CEO of Dangote Refinery, recently met with the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickson Mitchell, to discuss a potential trade deal. The aim is to boost trade between Nigeria and the Caribbean, focusing on exporting petroleum products.

The meeting occurred at Dangote’s $20 billion petrochemical facility in Lagos, where Mitchell toured the refinery, fertilizer plant, and other related projects.

Dangote emphasized that their talks included importing crude oil from the Caribbean while exporting petroleum products to the region. He noted that Mitchell holds dual roles, serving as both Prime Minister of Grenada and Chairman of the Caribbean States. “We’re exploring trade in petroleum and cement. We may also purchase crude oil from them,” Dangote said.

Prime Minister’s Praise

Mitchell commended the Dangote project, highlighting its significance for Nigeria and Africa. He was particularly impressed by the advanced technology and the involvement of young engineers in the refinery. “This is a remarkable achievement, showcasing Mr. Dangote’s vision for Africa,” Mitchell stated.

What You Need to Know

The Dangote refinery, which has seen a $20 billion investment, can process 650,000 barrels of oil daily. Once fully operational, it will be the largest refinery in Africa and Europe. The project is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel, addressing a critical gap in the nation’s refining capabilities.
