Susan Gbemisola Alabi, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) deputy governorship candidate, has resigned from both the contest and the party less than two months before the Ondo State governorship election.

According to reports, she resigned because of irreconcilable differences with Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the party’s candidate for governor. Alabi acknowledged her exit from the party in a resignation letter dated October 2, 2024, which she sent to Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the national chairman of the SDP. She also informed Akingboye that she was leaving her role as deputy governor.

“I am writing to formally resign from my membership in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with immediate effect,” the letter stated. I have treasured my time spent with the party, thus I did not make this decision lightly. But after giving it some thought, I think it would be best for me to go in other ways and explore new options.

“Please also take note that I have given notice to Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), the SDP Governorship Candidate, of my resignation as the SDP Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2024 Governorship election,” she said.

Alabi wished the SDP great success in the future and conveyed her gratitude for the assistance she got while serving in the party. The Otunba Bamidele Akingboye Campaign Organization’s director general, Femi Ikoyi, said that the party’s candidate was unaware of Alabi’s resignation when approached. Ikoyi pledged to verify the situation and offer more details.
