Russian President Vladimir Putin made a sarcastic remark on Thursday, stating his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election.
His comment came a day after the US accused Moscow of attempting to meddle in the vote.
Known for his satirical takes on US political matters, Putin frequently offers opinions on American issues.
According to AFP, last year, he criticized the US political system, describing it as “rotten” and asserting that Washington had no right to lecture others about democracy.
During a Q&A session at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin responded to a question with, “Firstly, (US President Joe Biden) has advised his supporters to back Mrs. Harris. So, we will do the same.”
He made the statement with a sarcastic smile and went on to comment on Harris’s demeanor, saying, “She laughs so contagiously that it shows that everything is fine with her.”
Putin further remarked on US sanctions against Russia, pointing out that former President Donald Trump had imposed more sanctions than any of his predecessors.
He speculated that if Harris were successful, she might refrain from similar actions against Russia.
Earlier this year, Putin expressed his preference for Biden over Trump, calling the current president more “predictable.” The White House, in response, urged Putin to stay out of US elections.
Putin’s comments followed fresh US sanctions against employees of the Russian state-controlled network RT, who were accused of trying to influence the upcoming election.
