Sifiso Dabengwa, the former CEO of MTN Group, passed away on Monday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Dabengwa led MTN Group from March 2011 until 2015, stepping down during a challenging period when the company faced a record N1.04 trillion fine imposed by Nigeria for failing to disconnect over five million unregistered SIM cards.
Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa also briefly served as CEO of MTN Nigeria before 2006.
His death was confirmed by a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, who spoke to South African media outlets.
In the statement, Sibanyoni described Dabengwa as a “titan in the telecommunications industry” and praised his tenure at MTN Group for being marked by “visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication,” which drove significant advancements in the telecom sector.
According to the statement, Sibanyoni said: “Dabengwa was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman.
“His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry.
“He was an advocate for education and a fervent believer in the power of technology to transform lives.”
An executive at MTN’s Johannesburg headquarters confirmed the news, expressing the deep sorrow felt within the company.
The executive noted that Dabengwa was still considered part of the MTN family due to his significant contributions during his time as CEO.
Dabengwa had been fighting cancer for some time before passing away early Monday morning.
