ChatGPT maker OpenAI has launched a new search tool, SearchGPT, stepping into Google’s territory and introducing an alternative to the dominant Google search.
OpenAI and Google are key players in the AI space. Their tools, ChatGPT and Gemini, compete for user attention.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced the launch, emphasizing the goal to improve search functionality. “We believe search can be much better. We’re launching SearchGPT to learn, improve, and integrate real-time tech into ChatGPT for maximum help,” Altman shared on X.
Competing with Microsoft’s Bing
SearchGPT’s launch on Thursday puts OpenAI in direct competition with Microsoft’s Bing and new services like Perplexity, an AI chatbot backed by Jeff Bezos and Nvidia.
OpenAI has opened sign-ups for SearchGPT, which is now in prototype testing with a select group of users and publishers. “Finding answers online can be tedious, often requiring multiple attempts. By enhancing our models with real-time web info, we aim to make searches faster and easier,” OpenAI stated on its website, encouraging users to join the waitlist.
Google’s Search Dominance
Statcounter reports that Google holds a 91.05% share of the search engine market as of June. Microsoft’s Bing has 3.74%, with Yandex and Yahoo Search at 1.44% and 1.26%, respectively.
Since ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022, major search engines have integrated AI into their services. Microsoft used OpenAI technology for Bing, and Google introduced AI-powered summaries at its developer conference in May.
OpenAI’s SearchGPT launch coincides with Google’s upgrade announcement for Gemini 1.5 Flash. This upgrade promises faster and more helpful responses, improving quality, reasoning, and image understanding. Google also expanded Gemini’s context window to 32K tokens for longer, more complex conversations.
Key Points
OpenAI and Google lead the AI revolution, striving to capture more market share with ChatGPT and Gemini (formerly Bard). Elon Musk’s xAI is also emerging, aiming to attract users with Grok, offering automatic access to all Premium subscribers on X, its social media platform.
