At the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) General Council (GC), the African Group made a motion to re-elect Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the organization’s director-general. This was stated in an Abuja statement by Adebayo Thomas, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment.
He claims that the suggestion is for members to think about Okonjo-Iweala running for the position of chief executive officer of the organisation once more. According to him, the suggestion also aimed to facilitate the General Council (GC) Chair’s ability to start the director-general recruitment process as soon as feasible. At the GC, he cited Amb. Abdulhamid Adamu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, who stated that there was discussion among the members over the matter.
“And every member emphasised Okonjo-Iweala’s numerous efforts, attributes, and services to the organisation, which greatly aided in its growth and development. They all agreed that she is deserving of a second term as director general.
“The proposal was supported by nearly 58 members of the meeting who spoke from all regions,” he stated. He continued by saying that the members decided that the General Council Chair ought to begin the appointment process consultations as soon as possible, after council approval. In response, Okonjo-Iweala thanked each participant and promised, after conferring with family members, to react as soon as possible with her acceptance.(NAN)
