Barrister Rashidat Mohammed was chosen as the first female chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Sokoto state chapter, and she will lead the organisation for the next two years.
The Association’s secretariat, located near the Mai Ruwa roundabout in the heart of Sokoto, served as the venue for the free and fair election. With the exception of the Association’s chairman and assistant secretary, every post was run without opposition.
Barrister Rashidat Mohammed defeated opponent Yahaya Yanusa Gwazawa, who received 68 votes, to win the Charman title with 70 votes. Barrister Mohammed Anas Shuni, who received 70 votes to defeat Barrister Fatima Attahiru Hassan, who received 67, is the next Assistant Secretary.
Barrister Mohammed Mansur Aliyu was elected Vice Chairman without opposition; Umar Aliyu was elected Secretary; Barrister Mohammed Buhari Abubakar was elected Treasurer; and Ibrahim Sale Zamau Suwaiba was elected Provost.
Barrister Yusuf Nawawi, the Social Secretary, Barrister Faruk Abdullahi, the Welfare Secretary, and Aminu Hassan, the Publicity Secretary, were elected without opposition. Barrister J E Ochidi SAN kept a close check on the election, which was held at the NBA with complete accountability and openness on the total number of votes cast, the total number of authorised ballots, and the total number of invalid votes. Shortly after the election, Honourable Justice Kab Mahmoud, a higher court judge, administered the oath of office.
The newly elected members were congratulated by the chairman of the election committee, Barrister J E Ochidi SAN, on winning the election, but he also urged them to provide evidence for the trust placed in them.
He urged all Association members to assist the new executives in their endeavours to advance the Association by providing their support and collaboration. The newly elected NBA chairman, Barrister Rashidat Mohammed, thanked the organization’s members for their encouragement and support in her post-election statement.
She also stated that she will always be appreciative of them for granting her the chance to lead them. Throughout her leadership term, she stated, the interests and wellbeing of all Association members will come first.
The new NBA chairman declares, “I will continue to represent your interest wherever I find myself.” During his two years in office, the outgoing chairman Mohammed Nuhu thanked all of the NBA Sokoto members for their collaboration and support.
Nonetheless, he commended the new CEOs for their ability to function as a cohesive one to attain success. As the former Chairman puts it, “Be honest, transparent, and truthful to your members.” After two years of inept leadership, Barrister Nuhu gave Barrister Rashidat Mohammed the reins as head of the NBA Sokoto state chapter.
