Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, has paid visits to the ten Nigerian girls who were transported to Ghana on the pretence of being “sales girls” in order to engage in prostitution, according to Vanguard.
The head of NiDCOM denounced human trafficking subsequent to his intervention in the Nigerian girls’ rescue.
This was said in a statement released on Monday and signed by Gabriel Odu from NiDCOM’s public relations department.
Following the arrest of the suspect, who is presently being held in security custody, the girls—eight of them from Imo State and two from Plateau State—were set free.
The teenage ladies, who were reportedly led into prostitution in Ghana, were depicted in a series of films that went popular on Twitter on Friday. They ranged in age from 15 to 18.
The Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation in Ghana is said to have carried out the rescue of the ten trafficked Nigerian youngsters.
When Dabiri-Erewa visited the rescued girls in Ghana, she expressed her admiration for the work done by Chief Calistus Elozieuwa, the chairman of the board of trustees of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, and his group.
According to the statement, the rescue effort was carried out with the assistance of a number of partners, including the Imo State Government, Ghana’s Eze Igbo, and Amb. Adeoye Ifedayo, the acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana.
Declaring that “we must declare a war against human traffickers,” Dabiri-Erewa emphasised the necessity of a long-term strategy to end human trafficking in Nigeria.
She recommended parents to keep an eye on their children’s locations and to work together to make sure that human traffickers are apprehended and brought to justice.
Before being sent back to their individual states, the rescued girls will receive counselling and rehabilitation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.
Ifedayo emphasised the need of putting an end to human trafficking while praising the Ghanaian NIDO for their prompt action.
Amara Iwuanyanwu, the deputy speaker of the Imo State house of assembly, and Nkechinyere Ugwu, the commissioner for women’s affairs, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the girls’ welfare.
The rehabilitation of the girls was also promised full support by the Plateau State Government.
