The Lagos State Government approved and disbursed N849,555,000 in scholarships and bursaries to 10,066 students at its educational institutions. Mr Tolani Sule, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, presented the data on Tuesday during the government’s 2024 Ministerial Briefing.
The event was conducted in the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. Sule emphasised the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to delivering excellent and affordable education to the state’s inhabitants.
The commissioner stated that the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S plus Agenda was clearly visible. He stated that Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions did not participate in worker strikes as a sign of the government’s commitment to educational growth.
“Not going on strike when all other tertiary institutions are on strike is something we are proud of. “This is to demonstrate that our capable governor does not pay lip regard to the agenda. “We know it will only grow better, and we are proud of all of our institutions. “Lagos State University is the oldest institution but new institutions are catching up,” he told reporters.
According to NAN, the ministerial briefing began on April 24. It will continue until May 29, with ministries reporting on their stewardships over the final year of Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s second term. “The amount of N335,600,000 was approved for 1591 as the 2022/2023 Scholarship Award for undergraduates and PhD recipients, as well as the 2022/2023 Governor’s Discretionary Awards.”
“Also, N513,955,000 was authorised for 6884 bursary awards for undergraduates and law students. “A total of N849,555,000.00 was released in year 2023 for 8,475, making a total of 10,066 as beneficiaries of the scholarship and bursary,” said the Minister of Education.
Sule stated that the state government was attempting to encourage children to read extensively by rehabilitating and digitising 300 secondary schools and 40 public libraries. “Reading culture is not what it once was. This is why the administration felt it vital to ensure that students have access to these amenities.

“When we digitised these libraries, we used dedicated power generation sets. Monthly, N250,000 is set allocated for these secondary schools’ digitalised libraries to ensure that they work smoothly. “When policies are made, we consider how it will succeed; so, this was well planned out because we have a target,” he went on to say.
Regarding entrance age, the commissioner stated that all Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions continue to admit students as young as 16 years old. “If your age is below 16, you are not eligible,” he added.
