The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the adoption of Nigeria’s digital currency, eNaira, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with blockchain firm Gluwa.

According to a statement from Gluwa, this collaboration aims to leverage blockchain technology’s potential to promote financial inclusion, enhance eNaira’s functionality, and drive financial innovation.

As the CBN’s official Partner Agent, Gluwa will integrate its Credal blockchain innovation directly with eNaira, beginning a deeper partnership.

Gluwa intends to onboard millions of Nigerians by utilizing its Credal technology to establish credit reputations for eNaira users, providing a novel approach to fostering the adoption of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

The Partnership’s Focus:

Gluwa highlighted several key areas of focus for the partnership, including:

  • Facilitating direct eNaira transfers to customers, streamlining the loan origination process for fintech lenders.
  • Establishing eNaira as the authoritative record for all loan transactions by fintech partners, ensuring accuracy and transparency in financial operations and credit scoring.
  • Implementing a robust authentication mechanism using asymmetric encryption with private/public keys to provide users with secure, private, and regulatory-compliant access to financial services.

Gluwa views its designation as the CBN’s official technology partner as a significant advancement in its mission to create a borderless financial ecosystem that prioritizes emerging markets and fosters greater financial inclusion.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nigeria introduced eNaira in October 2021, making it the world’s second CBDC to launch. However, eNaira has faced challenges in adoption.
  • The IMF reported “disappointingly low” public adoption of eNaira in its first year, with only 1.5% of wallets engaging in transactions weekly.

The partnership between CBN and Gluwa represents a strategic initiative to overcome adoption hurdles and propel Nigeria’s digital currency ecosystem forward.
