Up to $2 million worth of artwork was sold during Frieze Los Angeles’ launch on Thursday. Sales reports from a number of galleries indicated that solo exhibitions performed especially well.
“Today has been our most successful first day at Frieze LA since the first year of the fair,” Hauser & Wirth president Marc Payot told ARTnews.
Joe Bradley, John McCracken, Steven Shearer, Lisa Yuskavage, Huma Bhabha, Dana Schutz, and Suzan Frecon were among the artists whose pieces sold for between $250,000 and $650,000 on David Zwirner’s first day of sales.
In addition to the mega-dealers who sold pieces in the first hours of the star-studded show, sales of $250,000 or more in works were recorded by Casey Kaplan, Vielmetter, Roberts Projects, and Tina Kim Gallery.
According to Dominique Gallery, all of the pieces, including sculptures priced between $12,000 and $100,000, were included in Mustafa Ali Clayton’s solo exhibition.
Ten Vanessa German pieces, each valued between $25,000 and $65,000, were sold on opening day, according to New York’s Kasmin Gallery. In 2022, the artist was granted the Heinz Award for the Arts. Oakland, California’s pt.2 gallery claimed to have placed all of its pieces by Muzae Sesay, although it withheld information about sales figures.
