In honour of the surrealist movement’s 100th anniversary, two shows in Belgium are sure to delight fans of the style.

“Histoire de ne pas rire” at Brussels Arts Centre Bozar showcases the Belgian surrealist scene, while “Imagine” at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts brings together international surrealists.

The exhibitions are taking place in conjunction with Belgium’s presidency of the European Union Council.

The shows are “an opportunity to discover major works that will fire our imagination and challenge our perceptions,” according to a tweet from Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib.

The intention is to demonstrate the role that dreams and intuition play in the creative process.

The Bozar exhibition “Histoire de ne pas rire” will run from February 21 to June 16, 2024, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts will host “Imagine” from February 21 to July 21, 2024.

Hadjah Lahbib wrote: “Surrealism, the 🇧🇪 artistic movement, is celebrating its 100th anniversary! Proud to be opening the exhibition ‘Histoire de ne pas rire. Het surrealisme in 🇧🇪’@BozarBrussels. An opportunity to discover major works that will fire our imagination & challenge our perceptions.”
